The Department of Applied Human Sciences at Concordia offers a range of challenging and innovative programs for students who are interested in working with individuals, groups, organizations and communities.
Rather than representing a single discipline, our department name expresses our approach to teaching and learning. "Applied" refers to our emphasis on practice as well as theory, "Human" because the models and methods we teach focus on people and the systems that they are a part of, and "Sciences" because we draw on diverse disciplines to identify what is most relevant to intervention. Our Faculty come from social science backgrounds and all have ongoing involvement in practice. Our research is applied and faculty publish both in academic and practitioner journals.
Graduates of our undergraduate programs gain knowledge and skill that can lead to entry-level employment in the Human Sciences. Our programs also provide excellent background for graduate training in the helping professions. Our M.A. students in Human Systems Intervention learn consultation and training skills, and are well equipped to intervene in small and large systems. Our courses at all levels stress interaction in the classroom and all our programs include fieldwork outside the university.
Thank you for your interest in our programs. I hope you will read on to discover the many exciting opportunities that AHSC has to offer.
